Summer is here!
The sun stays out extra late, and as my 5-year old would say, the sun wakes up extremely early. And so do my children.
I was ‘blessed’ with two children that are early risers. When I say early, I mean the ass crack of dawn early. Who willingly wants to wake up at 5:30am every day?!
We thrive on schedules and routines.
Wake up is the same time every day unless it happens to be the 4th full moon after the 31st of October, and only after the stars and every planet have aligned kind of spectacular event.
My husband comes home for lunch at 12:15pm for 45 minutes Monday through Friday, my 2 year old naps from 1:00pm-2:45pm, Dinner is on the table by 5:10pm, followed by bath at 6:00pm. Then we do quiet time and my daughter is asleep at 7:00pm and my son follows closely at 7:30pm.
I’ve had comments in the past about loosening the reigns a bit. I’ve gotten the spiel about ‘kids will be kids, let them have fun’ and the ever so classic ‘they’re only young once, let them enjoy it!’.
They do. They can enjoy their childhood between the hours of 5:30am and 5:00pm. Easily.
Recently, we decided to throw a huge back yard BBQ ‘triple threat’ birthday party. Let me rephrase that, “I” decided to throw a back yard BBQ. My daughter, son and husband all have birthdays within 10 days, rather than celebrating 3 separate occasions so closely together, it made more sense to do one HUGE event. Right?
One night of relaxing the schedule can’t be that bad.
It was worse.
My children were awake until 10:30pm. They were happy, and enjoying themselves and having a grand old time. Until they still woke up at 5:30am. And were miserable.
Whining. Cranky. Tears. Tired. EXHAUSTED.
It took us a seemingly unending week of pure, unadultered Hell to get them both back on schedule. And for the whining and crying to go back to its previous minimum.
I vow, never again will I mess up their schedule.
I will also never again apologize, or feel like an inferior parent because we follow a strict routine.
From now on, whenever I am given a hard time in regards to our strict routine, my only response will be the following;
“Sure. Are you going to wake up with my children at 5:30am tomorrow?”
We will still have a busy summer, and enjoy the great outdoors… between the hours of 5:30am and 5:00pm.
